New & Radically Improved ChrUbuntu!

If you abandoned ChrUbuntu some time ago, as I did, then you may have missed Mr. Lee's recent blog update.  Not only has he completely rewitten his ChrUbuntu script, he's conceptually changed his approach in several ways.  I haven't tried it out yet because I've got a number of things in-progress ATM, but I would definitely have to say that the new script looks "Impressive ... Most impressive!"

  1. I haven't tested it myself, so IDK. However, a quick look at DistroWatch reveals that it's Debian-based, so there's probably an 85% chance that it will work on the C7.

The technique that I advocate is testing on external media (USB) first. Once you have it working from USB, transferring it to the HDD is a fairly trivial low-risk exercise. Soon, I will release an image and tools to make the production of such media much easier. Since I can't possibly test every distro in existence, this approach seems like a feasible alternative.

    1. Oh yes. Debian, Ubuntu, & the majority of their offspring and relatives work well. However, it's not simple or straight-forward. The easiest approach is probably to add Debian or Ubuntu to the Chrome OS like this:

      http://www.howtogeek.com/162120/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-on-your-chromebook-with-crouton/

The HowToGeek article also mentions ChrUbuntu as a dual-boot alternative. It's a little more complicated to pull off and riskier, but ultimately gives you a more traditional Linux experience:

  3. I read about crouton, but decided to go the Chrubuntu route, and I'm not sorry; this is just about the best laptop I have ever used, and certainly the cheapest.

    1. I just installed Chrubuntu on an Acer C7. Am curious as to which applications you find useful with Chrubuntu?

  4. I can't really speak about ChrUbuntu at this point, since I haven't actually installed or run it since November/December of last year. AFAIK, you're still running some version (i.e. 13.04) of Ubuntu Desktop (or a variant) on top of the ChromeOS kernel. Someone please correct me if my info is out-of-date. If that is so, virtually all the info you can find on the web (pertaining to that version) will apply.

With all that said, don't miss the 'Classic Menu Indicator.' With it, I can finally just ignore Unity!

  7. Restore Chrome OS. This will revert it to the way it came out of the box. I can't really help you with ChrUbuntu, it's a completely different animal now from last year when I installed & ran it. Try the creator's blog:

    1. I answered this comment at 5:23 PM on October 2, 2013. I was notified of my own reply by e-mail:

The best place to ask would be at the ChrUbuntu site. I can only tell you that way back when, ChrUbuntu 12.04 worked well after the intel video module (driver) got updated.

    1. That's a difficult question to answer. How are you doing it now?

  10. As I've read elsewhere, using "crossystem dev_boot_usb=1" will enable booting from a usb. If I have ubuntu 13.10 on a thumb drive, can i install 13.10 to the hdd? I'm currently running 12.04.2 but I need 13 and i hate spending the time upgrade one by one to get to 13.

    1. Of course, I would suggest using the ChrUbuntu install script to repartition the HDD. If you're running Ubuntu from USB media created with my toolbox, you can then simply dd partition #6 & #7 from the USB media to the HDD, assign them new GUIDs, re-prioritize the boot partitions and viola!

    2. One problem I am having. When I type in crossystem dev..., it comes back and says file not found, crossystem. I'm running 13.04 now. I open up a term window and type in crossystem dev_boot_usb=1? Because whenever i boot up, I go instantly into ubuntu from the white screen.

Also, is this how i would install debian and bodhi linux?

    3. Sorry about the delay, I've been off-line for the holidays.

Well, that command is part of Chrome OS, not Ubuntu, although it might function if transplanted, IDK. Generally speaking, yes - you can substitute a Debian or Bodhi root filesystem for Ubuntu's.
