BestBuy now has the revised model C710-2833 Acer C7 Chromebook with a 16GB SSD available for $199 with free shipping. Otherwise, it appears to be identical to the original model C710-2847 sold by Google. Don't miss the fact that BestBuy is selling it for $30 less than Acer's M.S.R.P. I'm very curious if the SSD has a significant impact on battery life but haven't seen any reports yet. No kickbacks here, I'm just trying to do my part to promote Chromebooks.
Totally off topic but I was wondering if you've been able to get hdmi output on your C7? I'm a complete noob but I've been able to get just about everything else working. Also wondering what desktop you're using on yours? Been looking to get Mint (cinnamon) but have been worried about messing up the crouton.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I've never used the HDMI, my desktop changes like the weather and only LMDE worked with my methodology. I'd suggest you try https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/chromebook-central

ReplyDeleteI have the new model with the 16gb SSD. My actual usable time on battery is about 3:45. I usually run less than 15 tabs, streaming music, social chatting, pixlr, etc. From what I've read, it is a wash.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info! Sounds like possibly a marginal improvement but nothing to get overly excited about. Are you talking about running ChromeOS only?
DeleteI'm going to buy an Acer chromebook tomorrow. Just found out about the 16GB SSD model and am torn. While I think ChromeOS is fine for what it is, I love Ubuntu and will mainly be using that on it. I still have my desktop, and a wireless network drive, so that along with the SD card slot and I'm thinking that the 16GB SSD is the way to go over the 320GB hard drive. Thoughts? The Staples near me has the 4GB RAM + 16GB SSD for $229 in stock.
ReplyDeleteIf Ubuntu is your primary target, I would stick to the hard drive if it's available. You can limit Chrome to 8GB and it still work well, but the remaining 8GB is far from spacious for full-blown Ubuntu. In addition, the SSD provides little benefit except at boot-time and the C7 can't boot from the SD card slot. You do understand that a Chromebook is not a typical laptop. Unless you can make use of Chrome OS, you probably don't want a Chromebook.
